Beaumont Hosts Southeast Asia Cancer Forum

The Beaumont Hospitals Cancer Institute, The Bharatiya Temple and the Michigan Association of Physicians from India are hosting the Annual Southeast Asia Cancer Prevention Forum" from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, at the Bharatiya Temple, 6850 N. Adams Rd. (at South Boulevard), Troy.

Beaumont cardiologist Dinesh Shah, M.D., will moderate. Lunch will be served.

Topics include cancer of the breast, prostate, colon, cervix and ovaries. There will be free clinical breast exams and free prostate cancer testing available, with registration for free mammograms for those who qualify. There will also be educational tables providing information on the unique services provided by Beaumont Hospitals for cancer patients and their families.

The forum will include discussions with Beaumont doctors Iqbal Boxwala, M.D., Prem Khilanani, M.D., Sugandah Shetty, M.D., Savitha Balaraman, M.D., Nafisa Kuwajerwala, M.D., Padmaja Venuturumilli, M.D., Nayana Dekhne, M.D. and Adil Akhtar, M.D. 

Call the Beaumont Cancer Institute at 248-551-0243, the temple office at 248- 879-2552 or the temple secretary, Minal Engineer, at 248-788-4886 to register.  There is no charge to attend, but early registration is encouraged.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to not only reach out to a specific community, but to offer preventative information that is relevant to that community," says radiation oncologist Frank Vicini, M.D., chief of Oncology Services and medical director of the Beaumont Cancer Institute.

Beaumont Hospitals is committed to strategies that prevent cancer or catch it early when it is most treatable. The National Cancer Institute has designated Beaumont Hospitals as a Community Clinical Oncology Program, one of about 50 in the country that connect academic centers with community physicians who enroll patients in medical research. The Michigan Cancer Consortium bestowed a Spirit of Collaboration Award on the Beaumont Cancer Institute's Minority Outreach Program in 2007.

Two Students Hang 1,000 Origami Cranes in Pediatric Garden

Alexandra Weaver and Jennifer Li, both 14, want to help kids and their families at Beaumont Children's Hospital in Royal Oak. On Tuesday, March 9 at 3 pm, they hung 1,000 paper cranes in the Children's Miracle Network Garden. According to Japanese legend, anyone who folds 1,000 origami cranes will be granted a wish. It took the Detroit Country Day students nearly three months to make the cranes. Both girls have a family member who developed cancer.

Beaumont Hospitals Helping Students to Kick Butts at Oakland University

Tom Spring, program manager, myOptimal Health at Beaumont Hospitals, along with Beaumont's Business Health Strategies, is offering Oakland University students a free 6-week smoking cessation program. The program aims to help the campus go smoke-free. It is open to the first 30 OU students who want to quit smoking and concludes with a celebration for those who successfully quit. A workbook and relaxation CD are also included.

Ice Skating can be a pain in the back

Jodi Sandvik, a physical therapist and athletic trainer involved with Beaumont's Sports Medicine program, trains aspiring skaters at the Detroit Skating Club. She says the most common skating injuries are back injuries and is available to discuss strength and conditioning exercises to help prevent the injuries and what she does when skaters do get injured.  

Beaumont & Royal Oak Schools Offer 'Parent Empowerment Series'

Area parents are invited to attend monthly empowerment programs at Northwood Elementary School in Royal Oak. No charge, but registration is required. To register call 248-691-4774.
